What is Japanese Knotweed?
Japanese Knotweed is a highly invasive perennial weed which poses a very serious threat to all types of property and proposed development sites because of its wide-ranging root system. These roots are tricky to get rid of and Japanese Knotweed can cause serious damage to driveway surfaces, concrete, paving slabs and most significantly to the foundations and drains of the property.
The plant originated in Japan and was introduced to the UK by the Victorians. It is an extremely fast-growing plant which will spread quickly if left untreated. The plant has large heart-shaped leaves, with a tipped-point which are staggered down the stem. In the summer, they can also grow clusters of small white flowers. Their stems and leaves turn brown and become dormant in the winter.
Why is it a Problem?
Many lenders will not offer loans or Mortgages on properties or proposed developments that have Japanese Knotweed or have had a history of the plant unless there is a Japanese Knotweed Management Plan in place which includes an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG).
Our Solution
In addition to our wide range of structural warranties and other Technical Services, Build-Zone’s parent company Sennocke International Insurance Services has negotiated an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) with certain Underwriters at Lloyds. This IBG is available from a number of Japanese Knotweed Removal Contractors, registered with us, as long as they carry out the treatment and provide a Japanese Knotweed Management Plan. This Japanese Knotweed Insurance Backed Guarantee is available for periods up to 10 years from the date of final treatment by the Knotweed Removal Contractor.
